Author Interview: Pam Rosenthal

Whipped Cream is pleased to welcome Pam Rosenthal, author of The Edge of Impropriety which was recently named one of the 5 best romances of 2008 by Library Journal and, writing as Molly Weatherfield, Carrie’s Story, Playboy.com called one of the 25 sexiest novels ever written.

I asked Pam how she personally distinguished between erotica, erotic romance, and pornography.

“Just to be snarky, I sometimes call what I do ‘pornography,’” she admitted. “Well, actually, I don’t do it to be snarky or in-your-face – but more because I haven’t ever been able to figure out a line of demarcation that works in all cases and I find that situation fascinating, provocative, even hot.

“Still, I do have to admit that with the ascendancy of the internet, ‘pornography’ has taken on a more particular set of meanings, having to do with images looked at in private, for money, along with huge numbers of other folks at the same time. It’s come to be more about looking than reading, and so mostly I settle for ‘erotica’ and ‘erotic romance’ as descriptions of what I write.”

She sees the line between erotica and erotic romance as more clear, however. The line has to do with reader expectations about what Pam called “eventual achieved permanent relationships.” She continued, “I don't agree with some folks who think this rules out sex with multiple characters, though. And in my Molly Weatherfield books I think I straddled the line between erotica and erotic romance, episodic and character-driven plot, and gave the reader a more complicated view of the matter.”

One erotic fiction author who Pam admires is Stephen Elliot. “He knocks my socks off,” she told me. “His linked story collection My Girlfriend Comes To The City And Beats Me Up is challengingly, mysteriously wonderful (even if it's not pretty).

“Another hot writer readers of this blog might not know about is Steve Almond. I don't pick up his short stories for the sex, but when it’s there it’s truly and hotly rendered, often from the POV of a female character.”

Other authors she recommends are Mary Gaitskill, whose short story “Secretary” became the BDSM movie "Secretary" with Maggie Gyllenhaal; Colette, who Pam told me didn’t write very explicit stuff, but is not to be missed irregardless; and her “pal and partner in crime” Janet Mullany.

Her favorite erotic book of all time is by yet another author, Dominique Aury (writing as Pauline Réage), Story of O. “I wrote about the book and its author on Salon.com on the occasion of Aury’s death in 1998.” The article can be found here.

“And anybody who knows my Molly Weatherfield erotica knows that both Carrie's Story and Safe Word are passionate homages to Aury and Story Of O,” she said.

Pam told me that writing good erotica is its own reward. “In all the best possible ways,” she added. “It makes me wiggle my butt in my desk chair; it makes me think and gives me permission simply to marvel at my own human strangeness. I consider myself blessed when I'm able to pull it off; I grieve when it's not coming off well.”

She believes that one of the most prevalent misconceptions about erotica romance is “that it’s merely episodic or that it's unable to tell a story or engage the reader's intelligence. But your readers know better than that, don't they?”

I asked Pam who she would be, if she could be anyone she wanted.

“In order to answer that question,” she replied, “I’ll first have to tell you a Jewish joke.

A little Jewish teacher sighs. ‘Oy, if only I was as rich as Rothschild.’ To which he adds, ‘And you know, if I was as rich as Rothschild, I’d be RICHER than Rothschild, because I...I’D do a little teaching on the side.’

“And so, with that object lesson from my ancestors about the vanity of human desire in mind, let me wish to be a vastly successful, New York Times best-selling romance author -- oh, and while I'm wishing, make me tall, okay?

“But you know... if I were that vastly successful New York Times etc etc, I’d be even more successful, since I... I’d still be doing Pam Rosenthal / Molly Weatherfield writing on the side.

“Because writing one's own erotic fantasy life is always its own reward, and one I wouldn't give up for anything.”

On a personal note, her favorite food is kumamoto oysters—raw, on ice, with lime juice, Tabasco sauce and very cold, sparkling white wine. Sushi (with one crucial exception) is an everyday close second.”

That one crucial exception is sushi made from sea urchin. She told me she just can’t bring herself to eat it.

She has a strange habit which doesn’t seem very romantic to her, but so far her husband hasn’t objected. She’ll get story ideas (as well as solve story problems) directly after having sex. Not only that, but she insists on telling her husband about it. “It’s sort of embarrassing,” she confessed. You can keep up with Pam on her blog, http://pamrosenthal.com/blog.

Author Interview: Cat Johnson

Whipped Cream is pleased to have Cat Johnson, award-winning author of more than a dozen contemporary erotic romances, with us today. Cat didn’t always set out to write erotic romance, though. When she first got published, she wrote Young Adult series novels. “That’s about as far away and you can get from erotica, I know,” she said. “I love to write and, whether I’m helping my friend’s teenager with his homework or ghostwriting a magazine article for another friend, I am happy to simply be writing. But, I love to read romance and to be able to write it, and have it published, makes it a dream come true.”

I asked Cat how she judged what made a good erotic story. “The sex has to be straightforward and not flowery (no purple prose),” she told me, “while at the same time not clinical. And, it definitely has to arouse the reader. Sex scenes should move the story or the characters forward and be critical to the plot. That being said, the rest of the story has to hold its own if the sex were removed. The characters must be real and likeable. The story must be compelling. And while the reader does want an escape and a certain amount of fantasy when reading, the character motivations and actions must be believable. Sex without story or story without sex is not good erotic romance.”

Cat told me that she thought people who’ve never read erotic romance or erotica shouldn’t have an opinion on it. Unfortunately, that’s not the case and people do have opinions and misconceptions abound. “I think erotic romance is not thought of as serious writing,” she explained. “I think most people who speak from ignorance about the genre assume that just because a book contains explicit, honest sex also means that it is not well crafted and can't have emotionally well-developed characters or good plotting and a strong storyline, the same as mainstream fiction.”

Cat’s mother and aunt aren’t people who judge a genre without reading it, as they both read her books as soon as they are available. “That nearly crippled me in the beginning,” she told me, “picturing my mother reading my sex scenes. I just have to put it out of my head. Though, I think I’m not going to let her read the threesome book.”

However, it’s not for her mom’s sake. Cat shared with me that her mom reads Emma Holly, so she’s sure her mom could handle the one little threesome in her book. “I think her reading my book may be too much for me to handle!” she shared.

I asked Cat which body part she would pierce, if she had to choose one. “I would definitely pierce my belly button,” she said. “I may still do it, who knows? I got a tattoo at age 35.”

When I asked her what about body piercing was sexy, she answered, “Maybe belly rings relate to the whole harem girl fantasy. However I think the whole clit piercing or nipple piercing is too scary to even think about.”

Cat told me that her favorite food is “a really tasty cheese with a glass of red wine. Does that count as two foods? Sorry, but one needs the other, no separating it! Of course, on a really hot day at the beach, the above can be substituted with Funions and an icy cold Corona with a lime. I'm flexible.”

However, one thing she’s not flexible about is Coke vs. Pepsi. Not only can she tell the difference in taste, she said, “If Diet Coke is not available, I'll drink water rather than Diet Pepsi. There is definitely a difference and anyone who says there isn't has no taste buds!”

She put herself through college tending bar, and she said she’s seen all kinds of tricks. “Tying a cherry stem with your tongue was one of the more popular ones for the female bar patrons. I guess any excuse to get a guy to look at your tongue and consider how talented it is, is a good thing when on the prowl. I can't do it myself, although I've never tried, so who knows.” She laughed. “I do pour a killer drink though.”

And, on a personal note, Cat shared that even in the dead of winter when her toes are hidden under socks and boots, they still have polish on them.

Finally, I asked Cat what advice she would give authors who wanted to write erotica.

“Read other books in the genre, particularly the best sellers,” she said. “Be a reader, and analyze what you like about the book and what you don't. But also be a writer, and analyze the logistics and the technicality of what made that book and that author a best seller. Be true to your own writing and to your own voice; however, you have to know the market and what publishers and readers are looking for and expecting.” You can keep up with Cat on her website, http://www.catjohnson.net .

Author Interview: Megan Hussey

Whipped Cream is pleased to welcome Megan Hussey, author of the upcoming Victorian Sensations being released this month by Firedrake Weyr. Megan also stays busy working in the women’s adult industry: she heads up the Playgirl Posse for Playgirl, Playgirl.com, and PlaygirlTV, as well as doing some writing for Playgirl DVD box covers. Her take on erotica, erotic romance, and pornography? She smiled and said, “They’re all fun.” She continued, “To me, quality women’s porn and women’s erotic romance share many of the same qualities, in that they’re both explicit and tasteful, sexy and romantic.”

She feels the biggest public misconception about erotica is that erotic authors slide by on their sex scenes and that they have no genuine writing talent. “I work with so many talented authors,” she told me, “and every erotic work I read (and write, or so I hope), contains a cohesive plot, strong characters and elements of romance. Writing an erotic story carries the same degree of difficulty as any other story.”

In her own writing, Megan would never write anything violent or nonconsensual. “As a feminist activist I believe strongly in presenting positive, loving relationships,” she said. “My characters, both male and female, are both strong and sensitive.”

Megan doesn’t write just erotic romance, however. Her first two books, Jingle Bell Romance and Mauve Christmas, were both nonexplicit. “I wanted to write something my parents, nephews, and nieces could read,” she explained. “They were fun, and there's a possibility now that Jingle Bell Romance might become a movie. Even so, the heros were so hot it was hard to keep 'em dressed and outta bed.” She laughed. “I'm so bad.”

She admires and emulates “chicks who kick butt and do it with class.” Some of the women who have this quality and who she would be if she could be anyone she wanted include Queen Elizabeth I, Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinem, or Xena, Warrior Princess. She added with a wink, “I also wouldn’t mind being the ‘towel girl’ on a Playgirl photo shoot.”

I asked her what food she considered best for eating off another’s tummy. She replied with a smile, “Whipped Cream, of course!”

She told me that her strangest habit is compulsive overwriting. “I keep a pen and notepad with me at all times.”

She looked around confused when I asked her what she could usually be found doing when she wasn’t writing. “You mean there are other things to do besides writing?” She laughed. “I love spending time with my family and friends, watching movies, reading and dancing.”

When I asked who would play her in a movie, Megan said, “I really admire actresses like Cate Blanchett and Helen Mirren, but would probably pick Kate Hudson because I've been told we look a little alike, which is very flattering; she's a very good actress as well and very funny.”

Finally, I asked Megan what advice she would give to a new writer just starting out. “Follow your dreams and don't let anyone tell you you can't do it,” she said. “If you have a story to tell, tell it and have fun!” You can keep up with Megan on her website, http://meganhussey.net.

A Glimpse of Everlasting, Passionate Love

By Renae Schroeder

Josie toyed with the lobe of his ear. His hands tightened on the steering wheel, her touch stoking a fire in his veins. He dared a glance at her, and saw the smoldering lust in her jade-green eyes. She moved closer, her right hand sliding under his t-shirt, caressing the hard six-pack of his stomach.

He abruptly turned down a side street, tires squealing. Shifting down, grinding the gears, he found an isolated parking lot. It was after midnight, the streets were deserted. His hands were on her in a heartbeat. She hit the lever for the bucket seat, reclining as far back as it would go. His lips claimed hers as he ripped the buttons off her blouse and tore her skirt in half in a wild frenzy to feel every inch of her. He kneaded her breasts and gently pinched her nipples, reveling in her throaty cries for more. Thrusting her legs apart, he lowered his mouth to her throbbing need. She eagerly lifted her pelvis to meet his velvety tongue. Skillfully, he licked and sucked until he tasted the wetness that signaled her climax.

Her eyes opened to look into his deep, brown depths. Mick smiled, trailing his palm along her cheek and tenderly cupping her chin. With a wicked glint in her eyes, she traced the bulge in the front of his already tight jeans. She pushed him back and wrenched open the button fly, releasing his hardness. Her hands slid up his ribcage to pull the plain black t-shirt over his head. She straddled him, sliding familiarly onto his member. He grasped her butt while his mouth suckled at her firm breasts, his tongue teasing and nipping. She entwined her fingers in his black hair, loving the silky feel of it, loving the feel of him. She flexed the muscles deep in her abdomen as she rode him, hearing his ragged intake of breath, knowing he was close. He hugged her tight, finding her mouth as he came on a wave of desire. He reached between them to quickly massage her, bringing her to another shattering plateau of joy. Breathless and sweaty, they held each other.

They had met when they were eighteen. Mick would never forget the first time he’d seen her; the way her green eyes had widened ever so slightly as she had drank in his image. Her curly blonde hair had been short, a perky bob that skimmed the bottom of her chin. She was 5’11, athletic, a size 12 that was firm and toned from years of playing volleyball. He’d wanted nothing more than to know her name.

Sighing, he rubbed her back, feeling the curtain of curls that had grown to her waist.

She tilted her head to look at him. “I love you, Mick.”

He kissed her forehead, “I love you, too, Josie.”

She had been enamored with him from the very beginning. Seeing him stride into her algebra class like some kind of Greek god had made her knees go weak. Josie had heard the rumors at lunch about some cute new guy, but had never dreamed he would wind up in one of her classes. Time seemed to stop as they had stared at each other across the room.

Mick had waited for her after class. Ironically, it was Valentine’s Day, and he’d asked her out. She’d given him her address and phone number, knowing somewhere in her soul that her life had just been completely altered.

Their first kiss was chaste and sweet, but their passion for one another steadily grew to an explosive level. Groping, touching, wanting, but all the while holding back.

“I want to graduate from high school and make something of my life,” Josie had told Mick. “I’ve always been a good girl and I refuse to do anything to screw up my plans, like getting pregnant.”

Mick had touched her face, “We can still have fun without risking anything.”

“What do you mean?” she’d asked quietly.

Mick kissed her, whispering, “Trust me.”

He didn’t try to trick her or make her do anything she didn’t want to do. Mick had eased her down on his bed, undressing her one piece of clothing at a time. When she was wearing nothing but her panties, he’d propped himself up on one elbow to look into her eyes and asked, “Are you OK?” Her response had been to lower his mouth to her breast, urging him to suckle. He’d slipped his hand between her thighs to find her hot and wet. His fingers gently probed, stroking her silkiness, letting instinct guide him to the place where she would discover ecstasy. She came violently, back arching, eyes wide open in an expression of sheer wonder. It was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. He’d covered her face in kisses, telling Josie how much he loved her, how much he would always love her.

After she’d recovered, Josie had shyly helped him out of his shirt and jeans. As they caressed each other, he’d guided her hand to touch him. She was hesitant at first, but when Mick groaned in anticipation, she’d fully grasped him, letting her inhibitions fall away. She’d licked a trail down his chest to his penis, licking him until his hands twisted the sheets into knots. She’d taken him into her mouth to fully moisten the shaft, finishing him off with a few solid strokes of her hands.

Josie and Mick married the Saturday after they graduated from high school; both of them still technically virgins on their wedding night. Twenty-two years had passed since that day in algebra and they had never had eyes for anyone except each other. Their connection went beyond mere love, lust or sex. It was as if the universe had hand-picked them for each other, had molded their bodies to fit as one entity. Only Mick’s touch could ever satisfy Josie, and Josie was the only woman that Mick could ever love.

About the author: Renae Schroeder is a native Oregonian who loves to write in her spare time. A child of the 1970’s, she dreams of leaving behind her desk job and being a full-time writer someday.
